The Speedmaster is a classic like very few other watches. This evergreen has been in continuous production since 1957 and has an exceedingly rich and interesting history. While the iconic Speedmaster Professional -virtually unchanged since 1968 – provided a stable base to start from, the Speedmaster has seen many different shapes, movements and designs throughout the years.

Notwithstanding the enormous amount of variations that have been produced for the past 50+ years, there is yet one thing that Omega didn’t offer before: an all-black version of the Speedmaster. Somewhat surprising considering the trend for blacked-out watches that was started a few years ago and doesn’t seem to be leaving any time soon! This year however Omega came in with a bang and introduced the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon.

Black watches can roughly be divided in two categories: those featuring some kind of coating (either PVD or DLC) and those equipped with a case in ceramics. One might argue that the latter option is the harder one, requiring the skills and equipment to develop a case in a material that is totally different from the regular metals like gold and stainless steel. Obviously Omega took the high road with the Dark Side of the Moon: not only the case is made of high-tech ceramics, but also the dial, case back and even the buckle are made of this material! Impressive, as the case back and buckle are often made out of either titanium or stainless steel with other manufacturers. The strap is made of Cordura, a tough fabric that matches the dark and mysterious look of this Speedmaster rather well.

Not only is it finished in a wonderful fashion – as can be seen through the caseback – , the ‘two-eyed’ lay-out also gives each caliber 9300-powered Omega a very distinct look. To boot, the coupled minute-hour subdial at three makes for a very intuitive reading of the measured time.

The Planet Ocean is one of Omega’s great success stories from recent years. Introduced in 2005, this watch took design cues from vintage Seamaster 300’s and quickly became a collector’s favorite. In 2011 it was upgraded to incorporate the wonderful caliber 8500, a see-through case back and numerous other upgrades. Now, for BaselWorld 2013, Omega introduced the first Planet Ocean to feature a GMT function: the Planet Ocean GoodPlanet.

At BaselWorld 2012 Omega surprised us with the Speedmaster First Omega in Space, which was modeled after the ref. 2998 Speedmaster as worn by Walt Schirra in 1962 during his Mercury Atlas 8 mission. The First Omega in Space featured quite a few details reminiscent of it’s vintage brother, most notably the case with straight lugs and no crownguards. Continuing on this vintage-inspired theme, this year at BaselWorld 2013 Omega presented us the Omega Speedmaster ’57.

While the Speedmaster First Omega in Space is as a rather faithful reproduction of the vintage model, the present Speedmaster ’57 can be seen as a modern interpretation of the original 1957 Speedmaster. It uses Omega latest chronograph movement – the stunning caliber 9300 with it’s signature two-subdial lay-out. The case is a few mm smaller than the regular 9300-powered Speedmasters, measuring in at a decent 41.5mm. The bezel is executed in metal rather than with a separate insert, resembling the CK-2915. It is available in a choice of metals – stainless steel, titanium (!), two-tone and either yellow or red gold.

Traditionally, a mechanical movement has three enemies: moisture, dust and shocks. The first two have hardly been an issue since the introduction of water-resistant and water-proof cases starting in the 1930’s, and systems like Incabloc and the more recent Nivachoc have made movements much more shock-resistant. Many watchmakers  however add a fourth category to this list: magnetic fields. While magnetized movements were previously a problem of professionals like doctors, railroad personnel and engineers, with our ever increasing exposure to electronic devices it has become a very real issue for others as well.

The traditional solution to this problem is to encapsulate the movement in a Faraday’s cage, as Omega did with the 1957 Railmaster. For the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 15’000 Gauss however, Omega decided to spice things up and do it differently. This time the movement is not protected by an extra shield, but it is rather the movement itself which is made invulnerable to magnetic fields. Omega achieved this through the use of selected non-ferrous materials, which resulted in a resistance to magnetic fields of over 15’000 Gauss! In the words of the manufacturer:

‘Even after exposure to a magnetic field greater than 15’000 gauss, the movement still performs at a chronometric level as defined by COSC.‘

Since the movement is not protected by an additional container, it can be admired in full view through a see-through caseback.

While this special Aqua Terra was already shown a few months ago, BaselWorld 2013 was the first opportunity for many of us to behold and admire this watch. And a beauty it is! The dial has the vertical stripes we have seen before, but the black is slightly yellowed to match the unique seconds hand and yellow writing. While the overall appearance is still classic, it has a certain cool and twist to it that really makes this one pop. The Aqua Terra 15’000 Gauss is available on either a stainless steel bracelet or brown leather strap.

Ace Trends lanceert de eerste G-Shock horloge & sneaker pop-up store in Nederland samen met Acht Amsterdam. De pop-upstore wordt geopend met een exclusieve ACE x ACHT G-Shock Party op 22 november op Vijzelstraat 105 te Amsterdam.

Op donderdagavond 22 november organiseren juwelier Ace Trends en sneakerstore Acht Amsterdam een exclusief feest, gesponsord door Bacardi, wat geheel in het teken staat van het 30-jarige bestaan van het horlogemerk Casio G-Shock. Als locatie is gekozen voor de winkel van Acht, welke voor de gelegenheid geheel in sfeer wordt aangekleed – inclusief de volledige G-Shock collectie. De muziek wordt verzorgd door DJ/VJ formatie Venour en DJ Flava. De G-Shocks zullen de volgende drie dagen ook bij Acht Amsterdam te koop zijn, waar de pop-up store van Ace Trends gevestigd zal zijn.

Casio lanceerde de eerste G-Shock in 1983 en introduceerde hiermee het eerste horloge dat écht schokbestendig was. Immers, alle G-Shocks worden ontworpen volgens de ‘Triple Ten’ criteria; ze moeten op zijn minst een val van tien meter kunnen overleven, tien bar waterdicht zijn en tien jaar meegaan. Sinds 1983 hebben de ontwikkelingen niet stilgestaan en zijn de horloges uitgerust met onder andere verschillende sensoren, radiogestuurde technologie op zonne-energie en nieuwe materialen.

A contemporary interpretation of the brand’s 1940s marine chronometers, this model transforms from wristwatch to table clock at will. each of the 1,892 pieces in the limited series – in reference to the year hamilton was established – comes in a heavy wood presentation box. the case, which houses a hand-wound Swiss mechanical movement, is inscribed with a unique engraving to commemorate this 120th year. Blued hands, the silvered dial with velvet highlights, and a top-stitched brown leather strap accentuate the watch’s sophisticated allure. An anniversary reissue that blends past and present in a stylish and versatile creation, whether on the wrist or inside its unique presentation box.
