Team Ace Trade Show Review: Basel Day 3

Team Ace usually visits the Basel Trade Fair for 5 days of which we spend two days in Hall 1 (watches), two days in Hall 2 (jewelry) and one day Hall 3 (loose stones & pearls). Then we travel to Geneva for two days to visit the SIHH and some of our other partners that have a showroom in hotels spread around the city. This year we jamming everything in to six days. That means we make longer hours on day and run even faster from stand to stand πŸ˜‰

Today was the second day in Hall 1 and visited: Ebel, George Jensen, Oris, Gucci, Hamilton, Omega, Breitling, Breitling for Bentley, Maurice Lacroix and TAG Heuer.

1. Ebel
We started our day by visiting the elegant stand of Ebel. They relaunched the brand 2 years ago with the introduction with the very feminine Brasilia collection. Last year they created a very modern and masculine mens watch featuring the manufacture Ebel chronograph: 1911 BTR. This year the created the unique and exclusive Tektron collection. Ebel will be the time keeper of the following European soccer teams and also created special limited edition watches for: Ajax, Arsenal, Glasgow Rangers and Bayern Munchen. I saw the concept of the Ajax watch, which will be launched in about 10 months. Ace & Dik Jewelers already claimed several of the 300 pieces! We have to support our team πŸ˜‰

  1. Great pictorial! Although not my taste, the Hamilton is original! The Omega Olympic Time Keeper hurts a bit… too bad that Omega continues to abuse the genius Speedmaster design for all sorts of limited/special editions. Yuck!

I had seen the Hamilton Electric in automatic version before in the US (Bernard @ Watching.nl has one), but it is cool to see that it will become widely available now. I love this watch for its history, and ofcourse for the fact that Elvis Presley had one πŸ™‚

    Have fun!

    RJ

  2. @RJ: I don’t like the dial layout of that Olympic Speedmaster either… it definitely loses it’s classic look with those Olympic rings…

The caliber used in the watch might make it more interesting though with its 5 (!) subdials in an unusual layout….

Alon, what are the functions of the subdials? Is there a date function in there somewhere?? (I think I see days of the week in the ring of the center subdial?)

  3. Note to self:
I should have said “I am not ‘over the moon’ with the new Speedmaster either”…
darn… once again missed a great opportunity to be funny…

  4. @RJ: I know your stance on the Speedmasters πŸ˜‰

@David: I am not a big fan of watches linked to any kind of (commercial) activity, so also not the Olympics. Technically though, it is an amazing innovation and movement. The chronograph can time 7 days. So, reading the subials from right to left, minutes of chrono, hours of chrono, day indication of calendar, hours time on chrono and final version is the seconds hand of the movement.

@David (again): Lol! On this blog you DO get a second chance for a first impression πŸ˜‰

  5. @David:

Where is the edit-your-comment button? πŸ˜‰

    @Alon:

I don’t want to sound grumpy, but they should leave the Speedmaster as-is indeed πŸ™‚ However, I do encourage Omega for introducing new technical innovations / high lights.

  6. @RJ: Although an amazing movement, I still like the Moonwatch Professional the best! We keep on repeating: less = more πŸ˜‰

  7. That Chrono-matic is a monster! Love your 5002 BP by the way. Do you have it on the brown band from the gold version there?

  8. @MWR: LOL! On paper, the 49mm diameter looks huge, but since it is slimer than the BP, it stangely is not that huge. The bezel is also black, which makes it less chunkier! The 5002 BP is steel on the brown alligator. Thanks for the compliment.

  9. As far as I understand, the BC4 is not very reliable. I’ve heard complaints that they tend to fall apart after some time πŸ™‚

  10. @Evgueni: Thank you for your feedback. Up till today we did not have any negative feedback… We hope it will stay like this πŸ˜‰
